We found this little one in our driveway last week. At that time it had no feathers and was completely defenseless. Over the past several days we've seen these miraculous things happen: the baby trusted us to feed it, its mother heard her baby's cries from our back porch and took over feeding duties, we learned that a baby bird can eat a dead lizard whole, we learned that at some point the mother stops putting food in her baby's mouth and instead leaves it in the nest for her baby to find, we learned that the mom grooms cicadas by removing the wings and legs before dropping them into the nest.
Today we are learning something new. The featherling looks out from our deck at the next big leap. The mother has stopped by several times to encourage her baby to make the jump. Will our baby bird fly today or just learn how to find food? We'll see.
